Sabic has officially launched MegaMolding, a new platform designed for large thermoplastic parts across a variety of industries, offering a scalable, high-performance alternative to traditional thermoset materials.
The goal, explains the Saudi producer of engineering plastics, is to provide the industry with scalable, high-performance solutions that offer greater design freedom and efficiency.
First showcased late last year during the molding of a battery cover at Engel’s Technical Center in St. Valentin (see article), the MegaMolding initiative brings together Sabic’s expertise in materials science with the application know-how of partners across the injection molding value chain — from mold design to equipment and processing technologies.
“With decades of success in materials innovation, Sabic is uniquely positioned to collaborate with industry partners across value chains to redefine what’s possible in large-part manufacturing with thermoplastics,” said Sami Al-Osaimi, executive vice president of Sabic’s Polymers Business Unit. “Unlocking their full potential can be a game-changer for manufacturers seeking improved performance, efficiency and sustainability.”
The MegaMolding platform targets a broad range of sectors. In automotive, it enables production of large battery enclosures (covers and trays), heavy truck parts such as hoods, panels, roofs and body panels, structural elements, and truck beds.
In energy and infrastructure, potential applications include Large energy storage enclosures, wind turbine components, and power grid structures. In industrial equipment, it lends itself to the production of Heavy-duty machinery housings, chemical storage tanks, and piping solutions.
MegaMolding also opens new possibilities in building and construction, such as structural panels and roofing elements, and even in consumer goods and electronics, where it supports the manufacture of appliance enclosures, furniture parts and protective casings.
