The European Chemicals Agency’s Committee for Socio-Economic Analysis (SEAC) has agreed its draft opinion on the proposal to restrict all per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
The committee’s work is based on the proposal put forward by the national authorities of the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden, covering all PFAS and all uses.
The Risk Assessment Committee (RAC), which is tasked with evaluating the risks PFAS pose to human health and the environment, adopted its final opinion on 2 March.
SEAC’s draft opinion, together with RAC’s final opinion, will be published shortly. The SEAC draft will then be subject to a 60-day public consultation.
The Committee for Socio-Economic Analysis is expected to adopt its final opinion, taking into account any relevant new information received during the consultation, by the end of 2026. At that point, ECHA’s scientific assessment of the proposed restriction will be complete and the two opinions will be formally submitted to Brussels.
Based on the two final opinions, the European Commission will then propose a restriction for discussion and vote in the REACH Committee, which is composed of EU member states.
