UK company Epoch Biodesign has acquired the former DOMO Chemicals site in Blanes, Catalonia, Spain, which produces polyamide 66 and has an annual capacity of around 52,000 tonnes.
The acquisition was announced in a LinkedIn post by Jacob Nathan, CEO of Epoch Biodesign, which he founded in 1999 to develop enzymatic recycling processes for plastic waste, initially targeting polyamides 6 and 66.
A distinctive feature of the London-based company’s technology is its use of artificial intelligence algorithms, physics-based modelling and laboratory screening to design and optimise the enzyme variants best suited to nylon depolymerisation. Starting with PA66, the process recovers the original monomers- adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine -without using solvents or high temperatures. These components can then be polymerised again.
“This acquisition forms the basis of a new, vertically integrated supply chain for nylon 6,6,” Nathan explained. “Importantly, it also means that our customers can begin integrating our materials into their products now, not some time in the future, further derisking both the technology and supply chain for recycled materials.”
The Spanish plant had become part of the insolvency proceedings, or “concurso de acreedores”, involving DOMO’s subsidiary, Domo Polymer Solutions Spain, amid the financial crisis affecting the entire group. The site was subsequently placed into liquidation and put up for auction.
