Avantium opens first PEF plant in Europe

The new facility will produce up to 5,000 tons of FDCA annually, a key intermediate for manufacturing the new bioplastic similar to PET.

avantium Official Opening Ceremony of its FDCA Flagship Plant in DelfzijlAvantium celebrated the official opening of the first demonstration plant for the production of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from sugars in Delfzijl, Netherlands.
This building block, through a catalytic reaction with bio-based ethylene glycol, can be used to synthesize a new bioplastic similar to PET: polyethylene furanoate (PEF), which the company will market under the Releaf brand.

Her Majesty Queen Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti attended the inauguration of the new complex, along with Avantium's CEO, Tom van Aken, and 300 guests from the Netherlands and abroad.
