The wave of consolidation in the packaging industry continues, driven by major mergers and acquisitions that last year involved key players such as Toppan and Sonoco, Amcor and Berry Global, and Novolex and Pactiv.
Now, Gerresheimer appears to be the latest name in the spotlight, as the German company has confirmed ongoing—albeit preliminary—discussions with private equity investors on a potential takeover offer.
For now, the bid remains informal and nonbinding, "still in a very preliminary stage". In response, Gerresheimer has stated that it will evaluate any potential offers in the best interest of the company.
At the end of last year, Gerresheimer itself expanded through acquisitions, purchasing Italian Blitz LuxCo, the holding company controlling Bormioli Pharma.
Headquartered in Düsseldorf, Gerresheimer specializes in plastic and glass packaging, containment, and drug delivery solutions for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and cosmetics industries. The company operates more than 40 production plants across 16 countries in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. With approximately 13,400 employees, Gerresheimer reported nearly €2 billion in revenue for the 2023 fiscal year.
