In a brief statement, the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) reacted to the accord struck in Scotland by Donald Trump and Ursula von der Leyen, which sets duties on EU goods entering the United States at 15%.

“We take note of the newly announced EU-U.S. deal on tariffs and trade and call for further details as soon as possible. While the deal appears to have averted the worst-case scenario, the additional U.S. tariffs on European exports risk further eroding the competitiveness of the EU chemical industry,” Cefic said.

The European Chemical Industry Council added that including several chemicals in a  “zero-for-zero tariff” list is an encouraging sign, yet stressed that all products deserve favorable treatment. The federation warned that the new levies threaten a highly integrated transatlantic value chain where raw and intermediate materials shuttle back and forth, adding value at each stage.

Cefic also used the announcement to press Brussels to implement its recently published Chemical Industry Action Plan without delay, saying, “There is no time to waste.”  Finally, the group urged EU policymakers to intensify efforts on a broader free-trade agenda “to open new markets for EU chemical companies.”
