RecyClass, the certification scheme for recyclability and recycled content in plastic products, has officially launched the Sorting Process Certification, a new framework aimed at ensuring traceability in plastic waste sorting operations. The initiative is designed to meet the requirements for recycled plastics intended for food contact, in accordance with EU Regulation No. 2022/1616.

The certification will be available starting in early 2026 to sorting centers and recycling chain operators involved in the preparation of plastic waste for recycling.

The new scheme places strong emphasis on quality control and traceability throughout the sorting process—from incoming waste to the output of material ready for recycling. A key feature is Module Alpha, which introduces additional criteria specifically for facilities sorting plastic waste that may be recycled for food-contact applications.

“With this new addition to our certification schemes, RecyClass is reinforcing trust in the use of recycled materials across the entire plastics value chain,” said Paolo Glerean (pictured), chairman of RecyClass. “By integrating the Sorting Process, Recycling Process and Recycled Plastics Traceability Certifications, RecyClass has established a comprehensive system that ensures full material traceability—from waste sorting to its incorporation into new products.”

In the coming months, RecyClass will begin training third-party certification bodies to enable the global rollout of the certification scheme. The goal is to provide a structured and verifiable approach for operators committed to ensuring transparent traceability in plastic waste handling.
