The European Commission has announced the launch of the Critical Chemicals Alliance, part of the Chemical Industry Action Plan presented in July.

The goal, the Commission states in a release, is to strengthen the competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability of the chemical industry in the European Union, at a time marked by geopolitical tensions, the risk of plant closures, and structural weaknesses in strategic production capacities.

The alliance is open to all organizations active in the chemical industry, including companies, associations, investors, research bodies and civil society. Applications can be submitted by signing the online alliance declaration, committing to actively contribute to its objectives.

The first general assembly of the alliance will be held in the presence of the Executive Vice President for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy, Stéphane Séjourné, at a date yet to be announced.

Initial tasks will include defining common criteria for identifying critical chemical productions and essential molecules for the European economy and strategic sectors (such as energy, electronics, healthcare, defense, and agriculture); mapping critical substances to strengthen trade monitoring and early warning capabilities; and coordinating investments between national and EU-level financial instruments.

Operational activities will be overseen by a steering board, responsible for defining priorities and goals, while thematic working groups will focus on key areas such as trade resilience, innovation, and sustainable production.
