Clariant in JV for flame retardants

Agreement signed with chemical group Fuhua to build a new plant in China for halogen-free phosphorus-based additives.

November 7, 2025 09:05

Clariant Fuhua new flame retardand planti ChinaA new plant for the production of halogen-free flame retardants will be built in Leshan, in China’s Sichuan province, through a joint venture between Swiss group Clariant and Chinese company Fuhua.

The joint initiative, which is still subject to approval by the authorities, aims to produce next-generation phosphorus-based flame retardants intended for various application sectors, such as building and construction, automotive, electronics and electrical engineering.

In a changing regulatory context and with increasingly ambitious sustainability goals from customers, the two partners explain, the joint venture aims to turn these challenges into targeted innovation opportunities, developing phosphorus-based flame retardants with performance equal to or greater than current flame resistance standards, in full compliance with regulations.

“This joint venture marks an important step in our commitment to developing flame retardants that solve both performance needs and regulatory concerns,” said Angela Cackovich, president of adsorbents and additives for the EMEA region and member of Clariant’s Executive Steering Committee. “By partnering with Fuhua, a recognized leader in integrated chemical manufacturing, we're combining expertise to create solutions that will help our customers stay ahead of regulatory changes while maintaining the highest performance standards.”

For Clariant, this is a further investment in the Chinese market, adding to the CHF 100 million already invested in the Daya Bay production site, where a second line for the production of Exolit OP flame retardants for PBT was recently inaugurated. In recent days, the Swiss group also launched a new plant for Nylostab S-EED stabilizers in Cangzhou.
