GreenDot had announced it—and now it has delivered: The German recycler is investing in Italy by acquiring plastic recycling capacity.
After recently opening its local branch, GreenDot Italy, the group has now announced the acquisition of Forplast, based in Castell’Arquato, northern Italy.
The company specializes in recycled polyolefin compounding, particularly bottle-to-bottle rHDPE (from bottles and canisters) and recycled polypropylene (rPP).
GreenDot CEO Laurent Auguste explained the operation: “Together, we will increase our offer to converters and brands of true, 100% bottle-to-bottle-grade circular economy solutions. The expertise developed by Forplast over the years is unique. GreenDot will enable Forplast to meet its full business potential and contribute to broadening its market reach.”
He added: “This integration confirms GreenDot’s ambition to take a leading role in mechanical recycling of plastic packaging in Europe. The acquisition also demonstrates how attractive the GreenDot team is to entrepreneurs in the plastics recycling industry, at a time of profound market transformation.”
Founded in 1971 by the Villa family, Forplast combines polyethylene compound and pipe production. According to the company’s website, Forplast processes 70,000 tonnes of waste per year and produces 50,000 tonnes per year of compounds based on rHDPE and rPP.
“Integration into the GreenDot Group provides us with access to additional PCR plastic waste feedstock and allows us to apply our technical knowledge in the group’s activities,” noted Paolo Aimi, CEO of Forplast.
GreenDot originated from Der Grüne Punkt, a German initiative launched 30 years ago to establish a national EPR system for household packaging (the “dual system”). The group has since expanded its activities in plastic recycling and is now present in Germany, Austria, and Italy, where it operates through Synextra and the newly established GreenDot Italy branch. The company is currently 44% owned by Agilyx, 34% by Pioneer Point, and 34% by Circular Resources.
