Novamont and Deloitte Climate & Sustainability have developed a new tool for calculating the carbon footprint of products made from Mater-Bi bioplastics.
This tool enables partners of the Italy-based company to verify the environmental impact of their products in line with the requirements of the directive against greenwashing.
To use the tool, process data related to the production of a specific item must first be entered, including the amount of Mater-Bi incorporated, energy and water consumption, use of transport, and waste production and disposal.
As a result of this calculation, Novamont's customers will obtain a value corresponding to the product's carbon footprint.
Alessandro Ferlito, Novamont's commercial director, highlights, "We developed this tool to help our partners become more competitive and provide verifiable and reliable environmental performance data through a tool designed in collaboration with a third party, Deloitte."
The tool is currently under review by Certiquality. In the meantime, Novamont's business partners have been involved in a training program that will allow them to manage the new tool independently.
With this project, Novamont is responding to the Green Claims Directive, which sets criteria for the reliability and verifiability of environmental claims disclosed by companies, as well as Scope 3 emission reporting obligations under the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, which will take effect in January 2025.
Last year, Novamont announced a project aimed at its Premium Partner Mater-Bi clients to ensure traceability throughout the entire process, from raw materials to the final product, with environmental benefits along the entire supply chain. This includes a blockchain-based traceability system and artificial intelligence algorithms.
