Covestro starts up TPU plant in China

The first phase has been completed for the project that will make the Zhuhai site the group’s main production hub for thermoplastic polyurethanes.

January 23, 2026 11:44

Covestro zhuhai TPUCovestro has completed construction of a new production complex in Zhuhai, China, for thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU). Once fully on stream in 2030, the site is expected to become the German group’s main production hub for this polymer family.

The first phase of the project, with an investment of several tens of millions of euros, has delivered production units with a capacity of around 30,000 tonnes per year.
Through two further expansion phases, capacity is set to increase to 120,000 tonnes annually in the coming years, serving applications in sectors such as electronics, automotive and footwear.

The Zhuhai site will also be able to produce “CQ” TPUs containing at least 25% alternative, non-fossil raw materials.

Under Covestro’s “region-for-region” strategy, the new Zhuhai complex will be supported by the regional TPU R&D Center in Changhua and by a new application development centre in Guangzhou.

“With our integrated regional setup combining production, fundamental research and customer-focused application development, we’re well-positioned to drive innovation and deliver tailored solutions that meet the specific requirements of diverse industries located in south China, like automotive, consumer electronics to footwear,” notes Andrea Maier-Richter, head of TPU at Covestro.
