EU imposes anti-dumping duties on BDO

Provisional measures target imports of 1,4-butanediol (BDO) from China, Saudi Arabia and the United States.

March 3, 2026 12:46

import UEThe European Commission has imposed provisional anti-dumping duties on imports of 1,4-butanediol (BDO) originating in China, Saudi Arabia and the United States.
The decision follows a complaint filed in April last year by UK-based group Ineos (see article).

The rates vary by country of origin and producer. For China, they range from 105.6% to 113.7%. Imports from Saudi Arabia are subject to a 52.4% duty, while US-produced 1,4-butanediol faces a 142.5% tariff. An exception applies to Lyondell Chemical, which is subject to a reduced rate of 135.7% after cooperating with the investigation.

1,4-butanediol (BDO) is a low-viscosity glycol used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals and polymers across a wide range of industrial value chains, from plastics and textiles to pharmaceuticals and automotive applications. One of its derivatives, PolyTHF (polytetrahydrofuran), serves as an intermediate in numerous applications, including the manufacture of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPU), polyetheramides, cast elastomers, elastomeric fibres, coatings and adhesives. BDO also functions as a monomer in the production of biodegradable polyesters such as PBS and PBAT, which are used to produce packaging, disposable tableware and mulching films.
