A group of recycling associations, including Plastics Recyclers Europe, Chemical Recycling Europe and Zero Waste Europe, has launched a campaign to promote the use of European-made recycled plastics, which are currently under pressure from low-cost imports from Asia. The organisers are inviting industry players and citizens to sign a petition on the Change.org platform.

The campaign is based on the view that current EU rules allow imported plastic waste to count towards EU targets for mandatory recycled content in certain products, putting local recycling jobs at risk, slowing investment and weakening Europe’s circular economy.

The promoters of the “Circular Plastics Made in Europe” campaign are making four requests to EU authorities: exclude plastic waste imported into Europe (EU27+EFTA+UK) from recycling and recycled-content targets; ensure full traceability of materials counted towards European targets; support Europe’s recycling capacity and the people who depend on it; and create a coherent, fair and predictable policy framework.
