Uhde Inventa-Fischer, part of the thyssenkrupp Uhde group, has signed a contract with Turkish packaging producer Köksan to build a new PET plant with a production capacity of 324,000 tonnes/year, scheduled to come on stream in 2028 in Yumurtalik, Turkey.
The new unit will use Uhde Inventa-Fischer’s patented Melt-to-Resin (MTR) process, which features lower energy consumption, and will be able to produce resins for packaging applications and bulk continuous filament (BCF).
Output will be supplied not only to the local market, but also exported to Europe, the Middle East, the Americas and Africa.
The scope of supply includes the licence, basic and detail engineering, the supply of all major equipment, and operator training.
The continuous polycondensation MTR process eliminates the solid-state post-condensation stage normally used in PET resin production. This results in energy savings, lower investment requirements, reduced operating and maintenance costs, and higher yield.
The patented technology is based on two proprietary reactors, Espree and Discage, which make it possible to achieve the high melt viscosities required by the process. The first carries out an initial polycondensation phase at high temperatures and under vacuum, initiating polymerisation and removing volatile impurities.
The second reactor, Discage, continues the polycondensation process and further improves resin quality by optimising polymer properties such as intrinsic viscosity, molecular weight distribution and transparency.
Based in Gaziantep, Turkey, Köksan is one of the country’s leading PET producers, with an installed capacity of around 500,000 tonnes/year.
In addition to polyester resins, the Turkish group also manufactures packaging and preforms, closures, and polyester sheets.
The group operates plants in Turkey, Libya and Iraq, where it works in partnership with Al Mutahida Packaging.
The company’s stated goal is to increase production capacity within five years to 3 million tonnes/year of recycled PET, 3 million tonnes/year of PET chips, and 2 million tonnes/year of PTA.
