Brussels opens anti-dumping probe into Chinese PBAT

BASF has filed a complaint with the European Commission against imports of certain aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters, alleging they are being sold in the EU at dumped prices.

bioplastics china The European Commission has launched an anti-dumping investigation into EU imports of certain aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters, including PBAT and PBSeT, produced from fossil or renewable feedstock, in pure or compounded form - when the content exceeds 50% - and originating in the People’s Republic of China.

PBAT and PBSeT are biodegradable copolymers used in compounds to produce bags, packaging and disposable items intended for composting. PBAT is produced from 1,4-butanediol (BDO), purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and adipic acid; PBSeT uses sebacic acid instead of adipic acid.

The complaint was lodged on 20 April by BASF, the German group that produces a significant share of the aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters intended for the European market.

The dumping and injury investigation covers the period from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2025.
