Record year for Italian machinery makers

Revenue reached 4.8 billion euros, but 2024 does not look as promising. The Industry 5.0 plan could help sales in Italy.

June 30, 2024 15:08

negri bossi IMMHaving overcome the years of Covid-19 and despite a complicated macroeconomic scenario, Italian manufacturers of machinery and equipment for the processing of plastics and rubber recorded record numbers last year: revenue increased by +2.8% compared to 2022, reaching 4.8 billion euros for the first time.

Despite economic and commercial uncertainties across various geographical regions, which worsened in the last quarter of the year, the performance of the sector remained positive, driven primarily by a +10.8% increase in exports, which reached a value of 3.59 billion euros.

According to the MECS Research Center of Italian association Amaplast, in the top ten export markets for Italian manufacturers, notably positive results have been observed in France, Spain, and Romania, as well as in Mexico and Turkey. Only Poland and India showed declines, despite both having enjoyed very favourable trends in previous periods.

However, the data provided by Amaplast also revealed a downside, namely the decline in domestic market sales, which fell by -7.5% to 2.33 billion euros.
Italian manufacturers are awaiting the full implementation of the government’s Transizione 5.0 plan, which aims to guide manufacturing companies toward more sustainable and energy-efficient production processes. The plan supports investments in digitalization, green transition, and workforce training. Italian companies will have 12.7 billion euros available for the 2024-2025 biennium.
