BASF to increase EPS capacity in Germany

The production of graphite-containing, expandable polystyrene Neopor will be boosted at the Ludwigshafen site.

basf eps neoporDuring a time of widespread deindustrialization, particularly in Germany, BASF has unveiled plans to boost the production capacity of Neopor, its graphite-containing, expandable polystyrene (EPS), by an additional 50,000 tons per year at its Ludwigshafen facility.

BASF plans to start operating the new production capacity at the beginning of 2027.

The company anticipates growing demand for thermal insulation in building applications.
The market is likely to benefit from initiatives implemented by the European Union to make the construction sector climate-neutral by 2050, including the new EPBD IV directive ("green homes"), which sets stricter requirements for improving the energy efficiency of buildings.

The Neopor brand includes a family of expandable polystyrene (EPS) enriched with graphite, used primarily for the production of insulation materials for building envelopes. Graphite, which gives the material its distinctive gray color, improves insulating performance by up to 30% compared to traditional white EPS.
The Neopor family also includes versions such as Neopor BMB and Neopor Mcycled, which feature a reduced carbon footprint due to the use of bio-attributed and mechanically recycled raw materials, respectively, instead of fossil-based ones.
