Following the substantial failure of the first five sessions of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) tasked with drafting an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has scheduled a new meeting (INC 5.2) in hopes of reaching an agreement.

The most recent session, held at the end of last year in Busan, South Korea, failed to produce a consensus (read the article).

The meeting will take place at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, from Aug. 5 to 14, 2025, bringing together delegates from more than 200 countries, as well as NGOs and industry associations.
The resumed session will be preceded by regional consultations on Aug. 4, 2025.

The previous session in Busan saw the participation of 3,300 delegates, representing 170 nations and more than 440 organizations.

The most contentious issues in the negotiations remain the proposal to set a global cap on plastic production and the management of chemicals used in plastic materials.
