Italian PVC steady

540,000 tons processed last year nationwide; construction, agriculture and compounding on the rise.

July 1, 2025 15:49

PVC market in ItalyAccording to the survey conducted by Plastic Consult for the association PVC Forum Italia, virgin PVC consumption in Italy totaled 540,000 tons in 2024, essentially unchanged from the previous year (535,000 tons), out of a little more than 5 million tons of thermoplastics overall.

Drilling down, rigid PVC reached 280,000 tons, equal to 52% of the market, up from 268,000 tons in 2023, thanks mainly to pipe extrusion (+8%) and compounding (+15%). Plasticized PVC, by contrast, slipped slightly year-on-year, from 267,500 tons to 260,000 tons.

Regarding end-use markets, construction showed solid growth: 206,800 tons (more than 38% share) versus 192,200 tons in 2023. Within this segment, pipe demand held steady at 75,000 tons (17,500 tons pressure pipe, 28,500 tons sewer, 29,000 tons drainage).
Window-profile volumes fell to 78,200 tons. Renovation still dominates (85% of total), though slowing after the revision of tax incentives, while the share of new-build has risen to roughly 15%.

Consumption is also increasing in agriculture, compounding (export) and miscellaneous applications. All other PVC outlets are stable or slightly lower. As for exports, Plastic Consult notes that rigid PVC gained across all primary segments except calendered products, buoyed by stabilizing conditions in key economies.
