To strengthen the representation of the plastics industry, the Plastics Industry Association (Plastics) will merge with the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), an organization founded to promote scientific and technical knowledge in the sector and now counting 85,000 members across 84 countries.

The two organizations have signed an agreement to finalize the merger by the end of 2025. The deal, already ratified by both boards, provides for SPE to become a division of Plastics, maintaining its own governance through an executive committee modeled on SPE’s current leadership structure.
Patrick Farrey, SPE’s CEO, will join Plastics as executive vice president of SPE and chief integration officer, overseeing the transition and ensuring continuity of programs and activities. Once the merger is completed, SPE members will retain their membership status, benefits and identity within the new division.

The merger agreement foresees full operational integration beginning on Jan. 1, 2026.
