The twenty-year decline in the consumption of virgin plastics in Italy continued last year.
According to data from the latest edition of the multiclient study Plastic Trend Synthesis by the Italian consulting firm Plastic Consult, in 2023, Italian consumption of the main virgin thermoplastic polymers amounted to 5.03 million tons, a decrease of -6% from the previous year, thus reaching a historic low in the past thirty years.
For comparison, it is worth noting that in 2007, consumption reached its peak at 7.15 million tons.
However, the German polymer processing industry did not fare any better, ending 2023 with 12.7 million tons of polymers (both virgin and recycled), marking a -9% decline compared to 2022. This, of course, is of little consolation.
