Five years after first announcing the project, US-based NatureWorks has inaugurated its Thai plant for the production of polylactic acid (PLA)-based bioplastics, becoming the leading global supplier of this biopolymer.
The plant, with a capacity of 75,000 metric tons of Ingeo-branded PLA, is located within the Nakhon Sawan BioComplex in the north of the country, where renewable feedstocks - particularly sugarcane - are available in sufficient quantities to support production of the biopolymer, which could have a carbon-neutral to carbon-negative profile depending on LCA parameters.
The group is expanding its North Carolina site to support growth in liquid colours and additives for thermoplastics and polyurethanes.
