About two and a half months after taking over the site, Leuna-Polyamid GmbH has applied to open insolvency proceedings under self-administration for its Leuna plant in eastern Germany, which produces caprolactam, chemical intermediates and polyamide 6.

The site, formerly operated by Domo Caproleuna, part of Domo Chemicals, was acquired on 1 April by InfraLeuna and Leuna-Harze through the newly established company Leuna-Polyamid GmbH (see article). The plant employs more than 400 people.

The new owners appear to have come under pressure from a rapid rise in raw-material costs, estimated by the company at between 40% and 100%, against a backdrop of tensions in the Gulf region and disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The situation was compounded by demands for advance payment from key suppliers, prompted by the plant’s previous history. The young company lacked the necessary liquidity, despite the restart of production and strong demand.

The company therefore filed an application on 17 June with the relevant court to open insolvency proceedings under self-administration. The procedure should allow business operations to continue during financial restructuring and the search for a new strategic investor.
