British group Synthomer has reached an agreement to sell its Acrylate Monomers business, based in the Czech Republic, to German private equity firm Mutares, which has also signed an agreement to acquire Sabic’s engineering thermoplastics activities (see related article).

The business was the last upstream activity remaining in Synthomer’s portfolio and had been classified as non-core as part of the strategic review announced in October 2022.

The divestment, the British group says, will remove a highly cyclical and capital-intensive base chemicals business from the group, improving profitability and cash generation and further shifting the simplified portfolio towards specialties.

The Acrylate Monomers division produces acrylic acid, monomers and dispersions at its manufacturing site in Sokolov, Czech Republic, where around 300 people are employed. The business generates revenues of approximately €110 million.

Synthomer will maintain supply agreements with the new owner to source monomers and dispersions from the Czech site for use in its production processes.

The acquisition of the Czech activities represents a strategic platform investment for Mutares in the Chemicals & Materials segment.

The transaction is expected to close at the end of the third quarter of 2026, subject to customary conditions.
